Instructional Design × Applied AI · Portland, OR

Training your people actually finish — for industries where it's audited, not optional.

I build custom eLearning, AI-enabled content pipelines, and the courses your team hasn't had room to get to. Fixed bid. Concept to SCORM. Built by someone who ships AI products, not just talks about them.

Currently booking: 2 project slots for Q4 2026

Why teams bring me in

Your L&D team is excellent. It's also underwater.

Most in-house teams I work with are one to four people carrying a twenty-project backlog. They don't lack skill — they lack hours. So the new-platform rollout limps along with a PDF, the compliance refresh slips another quarter, and the AI question from the executive team sits unanswered.

I'm not a replacement for your team. I'm the surge capacity that ships the thing that's been stuck in the queue — and the technical depth for the builds outside a typical designer's toolkit.

01The backlog project. The course everyone agrees matters but nobody has room to build. Fixed bid, delivered on a date, so your team drops nothing.
02The AI-heavy build. Content pipelines, custom interactions, LLM integration, automation — the work that would otherwise mean hiring a $180k unicorn who doesn't exist on the market.

Services

Three ways to engage.

Presented the way my clients' world reads best — as line items. Every engagement is scoped in writing, priced up front, and owned by you when it ships.

Schedule of Services · Ravenwood Tech · Rev. 2026Fixed bid unless noted
PART I

Custom course builds

Complete eLearning, concept to SCORM/xAPI package. Scenario-based design, real assessment, built around retention science instead of slide-reading.

  • Needs analysis with your SMEs — I speak compliance fluently, so this takes days, not months
  • Storyline 360, Rise, or fully custom HTML course players
  • Software simulations, video production, narration, and interactive assessment
  • LMS-ready delivery: SCORM 1.2/2004 or xAPI with LRS instrumentation
Best whenA high-stakes course has been stuck in your backlog for a quarter or more, or a rollout deadline is approaching faster than your team's capacity.
PART II

AI-enabled training pipelines

The force multiplier. I build the automation that makes your next ten courses cheaper: AI-assisted drafting with human craft on top, template pipelines, media tooling.

  • python-pptx pipelines that turn source content into branded decks at scale
  • LLM-assisted script and assessment drafting tuned to your voice and review process
  • Automated screenshot and video-frame extraction feeding simulation builds
  • Workflow automation (Power Automate and custom) for intake, review, and publishing
Best whenYour team produces the same kinds of content repeatedly and the bottleneck is production hours, not ideas.
PART III

L&D AI advisory

A working session or short engagement that separates what's real from what's hype — from someone who fine-tunes models and ships AI products, not someone repeating vendor decks.

  • Team workshops: what AI can and can't do for your training function today
  • Tool and vendor evaluation with a builder's skepticism
  • Roadmaps for adopting AI without sacrificing accuracy in regulated content
  • Privacy-first architecture guidance, including local and on-prem inference
Best whenLeadership is asking "what's our AI strategy for training?" and the honest answer so far has been a shrug.
Proof, not promises

Don't take my word for it. Take the course.

"The Capability Engine" is a complete interactive course I designed, wrote, and engineered from scratch — no authoring tool, one file. It's both a real lesson on why L&D is business infrastructure and a working sample of what I build for clients.

  • Gated lesson navigation with progress tracking, like a full course platform
  • Interactive simulators — attrition cost, forgetting curve — built on real learning science
  • Branching scenario with graded feedback
  • LMS-ready tracking hooks (SCORM/xAPI) under the hood
  • Scored assessment and completion, all in a single portable file

The unusual part

A designer who ships. An engineer who teaches.

Most instructional designers talk about AI. Most engineers can't teach. The overlap is the whole value — you get one person instead of a translation layer.

Selected work

Where this has already worked.

Tax & Accounting

Tax credit compliance curriculum

Interactive eLearning for LIHTC, NMTC, RETC, and HTC programs at a national tax advisory firm — courses, software simulations, and reference guides serving 2,000+ professionals. Plus enterprise software rollout training, recorded and live.

Healthcare

Clinical & operations training

Software simulations, video production, and multimedia training pipelines for a regional healthcare group — where getting it wrong isn't an option and completion actually matters.

Applied AI · Ravenwood Tech

Shipped AI products

Four products built end-to-end as a solo founder — an iOS AI assistant with voice and phone calling, a local-first macOS AI platform, a health-tracking app on the App Store, and an automation platform. This is the engineering depth behind every client build.

How an engagement runs

Four steps. No mystery.

STEP 1 · WEEK 1

Needs analysis

A working session with you and your SMEs. We find the handful of tasks driving the pain — errors, ramp time, audit risk — and scope against those, not against "cover everything."

STEP 2

Fixed bid & prototype

You get a written scope, a price, and a date. Then a working prototype of one core interaction within days — so we agree on the feel before the full build.

STEP 3

Build & review

Full development with structured review cycles. Your SMEs mark up content; I handle everything technical. No surprises at delivery because you've seen it grow.

STEP 4

Deliver & measure

LMS-ready files, source included — you own everything. Where it fits, xAPI instrumentation so you can show leadership behavior change, not just completions.

About

I'm John.

I've spent 4+ years as an instructional designer inside regulated industries — first healthcare, now tax and accounting — turning dense, high-stakes subject matter into training people actually complete. Day to day, that means Articulate 360, video production, software simulations, and a lot of respectful arguing with subject matter experts.

The unusual part: through my company, Ravenwood Tech, I also build and ship AI products — real ones, in the App Store, with paying infrastructure behind them. Fine-tuned models, voice interfaces, privacy-first local inference. So when a client asks whether AI can help their training function, I answer as a builder, not a brochure.

I take a handful of engagements at a time, work fixed-bid, and measure success the boring way: did the thing ship, and did the numbers move. Based in Portland, Oregon. Film degree, distance runner, believer that clarity is a kindness.

Questions clients actually ask

The honest FAQ.

We already have an in-house L&D team. Why would we use you?

You should have one — and if they have slack capacity and the skills for your project, use them. I'm brought in for two situations: the backlog project nobody has room for, and the AI-heavy build outside a typical designer's toolkit. In practice your team usually ends up being my biggest ally, because I make the thing they've been fighting for finally exist.

How does pricing work?

Fixed bid for defined projects — you get a written scope, a price, and a date before any work starts. Typical course builds run five figures depending on length, interactivity, and media. Advisory work is a day rate or hourly. No retainers required, no surprise invoices.

How fast can you deliver?

A focused micro-course or simulation set: 2–4 weeks. A full custom course: 4–8 weeks depending on review cycles. You'll see a working prototype within the first days of the build, so nothing is a surprise at the end.

What tools do you build in?

Whatever serves the project: Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise for standard delivery, or fully custom HTML/JS course players when you need something a template can't do — the live demo on this site is one file of hand-built code. Everything ships LMS-ready as SCORM or xAPI.

Who owns the finished work?

You do. Source files, media, everything — delivered at project close. I keep nothing hostage and I'm happy to work white-label under your brand or an agency's.

Is our content safe with AI in the pipeline?

This is exactly why my AI background matters. For sensitive or regulated content I architect around privacy — including fully local, on-prem inference where nothing leaves your control. And AI drafts never ship without human craft and SME review on top; in compliance training, accuracy isn't negotiable.

What's stuck in your queue?

Tell me about the project. You'll get a straight answer about whether I'm the right fit — and a fixed price if I am.
