Four years of teaching

Same skill, very different rooms.

I’ve taught accountants, dental teams, subject experts, new hires and adults with disabilities. The tools and topics changed every time. The approach didn’t: find out what people actually need, cut what they don’t, and choose the format that gets it across.

Accountants

A national tax advisory firm · 2025 — now

Dense tax-credit software and compliance procedures for 2,000+ professionals. A manual wasn’t going to work, so learners practice in a simulated copy of the real software, with narration that explains why each step matters, not just where to click.

  • An interactive CCH Axcess simulation for New Markets Tax Credit work, with a reusable design system and a build map so later modules stay consistent
  • Tax quality-control training written twice, for two audiences with different technical backgrounds
  • Workday onboarding training

Subject experts

A national tax advisory firm

The people who know the software best are accountants, not trainers. Rather than route every lesson through me, I’m building a process and guide so they can record their own walkthroughs, which will become a series of 10–20 training videos.

Dental teams

Willamette Dental Group · 2022 — 2023

Clinical staff needed to learn digital scanning, from calibrating the scanner to sending a case to the lab. They learn by watching, so I wrote, shot, voiced and edited 40+ short how-to videos, and built software simulations in Articulate 360.

  • Worked with subject-matter experts to turn complex procedures into clear steps
  • Peer-reviewed other designers’ courses to raise quality across the team

New hires

HR and systems training

Benefits, payroll and HR systems, one task per video. People don’t want a course, they want the exact step they’re stuck on, so each video answers one question.

Adult learners

Shangri-La Human Services · 2020 — 2021

Workplace-readiness training for adults with disabilities, adapted person by person to different learning needs and communication styles. When COVID hit, I moved the program to live training on Zoom and kept people engaged through the change.

  • Trained, mentored and evaluated new job coaches
  • Coached employers on communicating with disabled and neurodivergent staff

Why this matters for developers

Respect the reader

Developers are smart. Like accountants, they want the answer, the reason, and then to get back to work.

Pick the right format

Some things need a doc, some a video, some a working sample. I’ve made all three and know when each one fits.

I use the tools too

I build with Swift, Python and AI models myself, so I know where people get stuck because I’ve been stuck there.
